Baron Rivendare's Deathcharger

A Brief Description of the Once Rarest Mount in World of Warcraft

Dec 20, 2009 Claire Ryan

Baron Rivendare's Deathcharger is an epic level 60 mount. Once the rarest mount in World of Warcraft, it remains one of the more desireable mount drops in the game.

The Baron's Deathcharger is an undead horse mount that can only be acquired in the Undead section of the Stratholme dungeon. (See photo 1) It has the same model as the swift undead mounts, abeit with a different colour texture. While Horde players can buy the undead mounts if they choose, the Deathcharger is the only horse of its type available to Alliance players.

The History of the Deathcharger

The Stratholme dungeon has been in the game since World of Warcraft's initial release, and presumeably the Deathcharger has been available since then. However, the drop chance of the Deathcharger's Reins (the item needed to learn how to summon the mount) was initially 1 in 5000 kills, making it the rarest mount if not the rarest item in the game.

The drop rate was increased to 1 in 1000 kills during the Burning Crusade expansion, and finally to 1 in 100 kills during Wrath of the Lich King.

Who can Acquire the Deathcharger?

Since the first drop rate increase to 1 in 1000 kills, players have been experimenting to see whether Stratholme can be soloed by a single person. The dungeon itself is designed for a group of five level 60 players. Although it is preferable to be as high level as possible, players at level 70 or better with reasonable gear should be able to solo the Undead dungeon section and reach Baron Rivendare in half an hour or less. A level 80 player in reasonable gear should be able to do the same in five to ten minutes.

Any player present at the death of Baron Rivendare can acquire the Reins, but the item itself has a minimum level of 40 before the mount can be learned.

The Deathcharger's Drop Probability

According to Blizzard, the Deathcharger has a flat 1% chance to drop every time Baron Rivendare is killed and looted. This chance is not affected by any factor currently in the game. However, it is possible to calculate the probability that, for a given number of kills, the mount will have dropped at least once.

  • At 1 run - chance the mount has not dropped yet = 99%
  • At 2 runs - chance the mount has not dropped yet = .99 x .99 = 98.01%
  • At 10 runs - chance the mount has not dropped yet = .99 to the power of 10 = 90.4%
  • At 50 runs - chance the mount has not dropped yet = .99 to the power of 50 = 60.05%
  • At 150 runs - chance the mount has not dropped yet = .99 to the power of 150 = 22.14%

On average, a player will see at least one Deathcharger's Reins drop after 50 to 150 kills.

This mount is being seen more frequently as level 80 players can run through Stratholme quickly and efficiently. It remains exceptionally popular as it is a unique mount, it is at present the easiest rare mount drop to obtain, and acquiring the Reins also gives the player a Feat of Strength achievement.
