Breeding a Gold Chocobo in Final Fantasy VIIHow to Get the Creature Needed to Gain the Best Materia
Breeding a gold chocobo is a long and annoying task but this guide has everything needed to create the elusive bird-like creature.
Ever since making their debut in Final Fantasy II the huge bird-like chocobos have been a regular fixture in the series from being the companion of the hero Bartz in Final Fantasy V to the rather confusing forest sub-quest in Final Fantasy VIII. The creatures were not only able to be caught and rode in Final Fantasy VII but could also be breed and raced at the Gold Saucer. The main objective of their inclusion is to gain the gold chocobo that is used to reach the game’s rarest materia necessary to beat the Weapons. It’s a long and frustrating task but this guide runs through what is needed to breed a gold chocobo. What is needed to Start the Chocobo TaskThis quest can begin just after the player's team steals the Highwind on disc 2. Go to the Chocobo Farm south east of Kalm and rent all the six stalls available from the owner at a price of 10,000 gil each. The Chocobo Lure materia is obviously essential and this should be in the inventory already as it was used to pass the deadly snakes in the desert on the way to Junon early on disc 1. By this stage it should be at least level 3. With the Highwind the Chocobo Sage’s home in the centre of the Northern Continent can also be accessed. Once there buy as many Sylkis Greens as possible, which at 5,000 gil a piece are very expensive and can be bought whenever more money comes in. On the outside of the house is a small grassy area where a red dinosaur lurks and in the fight against it steal three Carob Nuts. This might take three battles and as it has plenty of HP use the spell Exit when there are no more to rob – the low EXP isn't worth the time taken to kill it. Then go to Goblin Island on the north east section of the map and steal a Zeio Nut from a group of goblins. Breeding Blue, Green and Black ChocobosThe first order of business is to catch two good chocobos. These are found on the tracks near the Gold Saucer and each one will be with two Spencers (floating fish things) or in front of two Flapbeats (long neck, flying). Cheap greens will stop the chocobo from running away during the fights and it's good practice to avoid hitting the bird with a stray attack or magic. Great chocobos are found at the tracks west of Mideel and are accompanied by Spirals (armadillo type monster). The only problem here is to find a chocobo from each kind that are the opposite gender. Feed each chocobo about 5-10 Sylkis Greens and race them to B class at the Gold Saucer. Save the game, go back to the farm and breed the male and female goods with the opposing gender greats using the Carob Nuts. Once again, it’s an irritating chore as takes a large amount of luck to breed the two colours in different genders so it may take a lot of saving and reseting to get the desired outcome. After that the player should now be in possession of blue and green chocobos, which have the added ability of being able to run across shallow waters and mountains respectively. Give the blue and green chocobos 10-20 Sylkis Greens each and race them to A or S class. Then return to the farm and mate them using a Carob Nut. If luck works out a black chocobo (mountain and river) will be born. Breeding a Gold ChocoboThings get a lot simpler from here. Fly to the chocobo tracks on the Northern Continent – on the west side in the snow – and wait for a wonderful one to turn up in a fight along with white rabbits, again making sure it's the opposite gender to the black. Give both chocobos 20-30 Sylkis Greens each and then race them to S class. Save the game and breed these chocobos using the Zieo Nut stolen earlier and, finally, a gold chocobo (able to run across everything) enters the world. The Weapon victories are now for the taking.
