The Path has gotten several negative reviews due to a glitch in the game that caused the character to be invisible and unable to interact with the environment.

If you are looking for a review of this game, you can find the review here.

Symptoms That your Copy is Effected

  • In the forest, the game is in first person point of view (you do NOT see your character)
  • When you walk up to an object, you see a large transparency appear but no action occurs (you cannot interact with the environment)
  • When you try to run the game from the shortcut on your Desktop, you are redirected to a folder, from which you select the file which plays the game.

If any of the above are occurring, you have the bug. This bug will completely prevent you from advancing through the game at all, so it must be fixed to play the game. Those affected by the bug will not be able to interact with their environment or pick up items or even see their character. This bug will only be evident once you get to the forest, and should be immediately apparant - if you cannot see the girl you selected, your game is broken. Unlike some games, where bugs can merely be annoying or can be worked around or ignored, for this game you must fix the bug to play. Fortunately, the solution is easy and does not require you to have to contact the game developer or download anything further.

How to Fix the Bug in The Path

  1. Right click on the desktop icon that was created during the install. If none was created, create one.
  2. Click on properties
  3. Replace the target with ["C:\Program Files (x86)\The Path\PathViewer.exe" Q3DStart.q3d], removing the brackets.
  4. Press Ok. If you have done step three correctly, you should not receive an error message. If you do, check for any errors in the target line.
  5. Use that shortcut to open The Path. Your game should now work correctly.

What to do if this Fix Does Not Work

  • These instructions work with Windows, all the way up through Windows 7. Mac or Linux users might have to modify these directions slightly, but at least these will put you on the right track.
  • If you get an error message you have not copied the target listed above. Remember to remove the symbols at each end. Try copy and pasting the command line directly from this article.
  • If you are experiencing other symptoms not listed here, are still not able to get the game to work, or have another problem entirely, consider contacting the developers through their website, where they have a very helpful forum.
  • Keep in mind that this is a very nontraditional game - if you are having other problems, it may simply be part of the gameplay environment. Try changing the way you are playing (hint: just letting go of the controls is sometimes enough) and see if maybe it is simply that you just need to learn to adjust to this experiential game.
