Know What Buckler Different Characters Can Wear

Find out all about what the differences are between the types of shields in the free MMO game Runescape.

Shields in a RPG game such as Runescape are used to up a defense level and keep the player free from the brunt of attacks. There are many types, but they do all have their differences. Find out the differences between the shield types in the game. Most all shields will fall into categories of lesser level shields, mid level shields, and higher level shields.

Lower Level Shields

These are the bare basic shields, or starter shields, that a character can have. They have very little value but are better than nothing.

  • Wooden Shields – These offer a pittance of defense, and are not of any real value in the game. It is this type that you will get at Tutorial Island.
  • Kite Shields – Used for good defense to the player, they have vulnerabilities in stabbing and magic defense.
  • Square Shields – These have vulnerabilities against crushing blows. These won’t give a penalty for mages or rangers using them.
  • Training Shield – While in Lumbridge, this is the shield received from the defense tutor. Untradable, it is only a slight bit of improvement to the wooden shield in Tutorial Island.

Mid Level Shields

These are better than the lower level shields, but don't match the higher level ones for the stat and protection bonuses. These will, however, truly help your character while in game.

  • Elemental Shield – This has no damage protection from physical items but does have good magic protection.
  • Mirror Shield – A shield with no other defense or protection than from being frozen. Faced with basilisks and cockatrices, this is the shield to help in battles.
  • Fremennik Shield – Untradeable and very similar to adamant kite shields, these are dropped in Rellekka by the warriors and market guards.
  • Granite Shield – Especially good for ranged weapon defense and like damage, it will drain energy quick as it is a quite heavy shield. Not good for running and carrying.

The Higher Level Shields

These are some of the best shields in the game of Runescape. They are the best of the best, and can be considered partial bragging rights just having them.

  • Crystal Shield – The best shield for ranged defense, it will slowly degrade over time. Repairs are only handled by the roving elves by where it is obtained.
  • Obsidian Shield – Good for ranged weapon attacks and a fine defense number, it is bought from the Fight Pit Shop.
  • Third Age Kiteshield – A needed defense of 65 to wield, this is a rare kiteshield. It is a level three Treasure trail reward, has great protection benefits to the player, and is one for collecting.
  • Dragonfire Shield – This is the shield to protect against dragonfire. This is from the Duke of Lumbridge during the Dragon Slayer quest. You can “charge” this shield while in battle with dragons, each charge adds +1 to the Slash/Crush/Stab/Ranged defense.

There is a wide range of the shields, some help against certain forms of attack better, some give wider bonuses to defense. There are those that are needed to survive certain battles, and those that are essentially worthless. Knowing which shield is which can be the key to survival.
